Journalists killed at Israeli-Lebanese border

According to local media, at least two journalists have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. The pro-Iranian television station Al-Majadin confirmed that a reporter and a photographer from the station were killed. The crew had been "directly and specifically attacked", said the station's director. A security source also confirmed to the German Press Agency that a civilian was also killed in the attack.

Israel has blocked the Lebanon-based TV station Al-Majadin since mid-November. Israel accuses the station of "propaganda" and suspected proximity to the Hezbollah militia. It had become apparent that its reporters and broadcasts were "conducting propaganda against us", the Israeli Ministry of Communications had announced on X, formerly Twitter.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war following the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, there have been repeated confrontations between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on the border between Israel and Lebanon. There have already been casualties on both sides. It is the most serious escalation since the second Lebanon war in 2006.

According to Lebanese security sources, an 80-year-old woman was also killed and her granddaughter injured in previous Israeli counter-attacks in Lebanon. The Israeli army had previously stated that "terrorists" had fired mortar shells at a military post in northern Israel. The launch site was then attacked.

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have once again led to tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with the Gaza war serving as a precedent. The recent death of a reporter and a photographer from Al-Majadin, a pro-Iranian television station, during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza war-affected areas highlights the dangerous environment for journalists in the Middle East.
