Joschka Fischer: EU should possess nuclear weapons
The fight against nuclear weapons has a long tradition among the Greens. However, in view of the global situation, party icon Joschka Fischer is in favor of a nuclear arms build-up in Europe. The former foreign minister justifies his call with Russia and the USA in mind.
Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has called on Europe to arm itself with its own nuclear weapons. The EU needs "its own nuclear deterrent", Fischer said in an interview with "Die Zeit". "Should Germany have nuclear weapons? No. Europe? Yes," said the former Green politician.
"The world has changed", said Fischer, and Russia's President Vladimir Putin is "also working with nuclear blackmail". The arsenals of the Western European nuclear powers of France and Great Britain were not sufficient "as a response to the changed situation".
Fischer's party, the Greens, has been closely associated with resistance to nuclear armament since it was founded. The 75-year-old said: "I hope that America and Europe will remain united. But what will happen if Donald Trump is re-elected? Europe must also ask itself this question seriously in view of this scenario."
Fischer called on the German government to invest in an arms build-up with conventional weapons. "We must restore our deterrent capability," he said. "As long as we have a neighbor Russia that follows Putin's imperial ideology, we cannot do without deterring this Russia." However, this cannot be achieved "with a debt brake and balanced budgets".

Despite the Greens' long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons, Joschka Fischer, a prominent party figure, advocates for a nuclear arms build-up in Europe in response to perceived threats from Russia and the USA. This stance contrasts with the party's historical stance on nuclear disarmament.
Furthermore, Fischer's call for a European nuclear deterrent comes as he expresses concerns about the potential re-election of Donald Trump in the USA, suggesting that Europe should prepare for various scenarios.
In addition to advocating for nuclear weapons, Fischer also urges the German government to invest in conventional weaponry, emphasizing the need to deter Russia due to its perceived imperial ideology. However, he acknowledges that this cannot be achieved with limited fiscal resources.
