Joe Biden's Statement in Verbatim
*Dear fellow Americans,
In the last three and a half years, we as a nation have made great strides.
Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments in the rebuilding of our nation, in the reduction of prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable healthcare to a record number of Americans. We have provided long-overdue treatment to over a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. We have passed the first gun safety law in 30 years.
We have appointed the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. And we have passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been in a better position to assume a leadership role than it is today.
I know that all of this would not have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we have overcome a unique pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
We have protected and preserved our democracy. And we have revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve you as your President. And although it was my intention to run for re-election, I believe that it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to step aside and focus solely on the performance of my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
I will speak more extensively about my decision to the nation in the coming days.
In the meantime, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard for my re-election. I would like to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in this work. And I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the American people for the trust you have placed in me.
I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America cannot accomplish - if we do it together. We just need to remember that we are the United States of America.*
