US Election 2024 - Joe Biden about Trump: 'He speaks of a bloodbath, if he loses'

Despite his recent calls for unity in the country and restraint in the campaign, US President Joe Biden accused his political rival Donald Trump of inflammatory rhetoric. "He's talking about a bloodbath if he loses," Biden told NBC television in an interview.

Biden argued that Trump's rhetoric escalates the debate, not his. "I'm not the man who said I'll be an dictator on the first day. I'm not the man who refused to accept the result of the election. I'm not the man who said he wouldn't automatically accept the result of this election," the 81-year-old Democrat said about the campaign of the former president and current Republican presidential candidate. He doesn't use such rhetoric, his opponent does.

Joe Biden: Focus on Trump's actions, not metaphors

Regarding what he himself wants to do to cool down the political debate in the country, Biden said he would focus on the issues. In reference to Trump, he added that this includes whether someone accepts the result of an election or calls migrants "vermin."

Criticizing himself, Biden acknowledged that his formulation, "put Trump in the crosshairs," was a mistake. In a call with Democratic Party donors, Biden had previously said, "it's time to put Trump in the bullseye" – roughly, it's time to focus on Trump.

Biden clarifies his misunderstood metaphor

"I meant we should focus on him, on what he's doing," Biden now told NBC. "Focus on his policy, focus on the number of lies he told in the debate."

Fervent supporters of Trump have accused the incumbent president of his rhetoric being a contributing factor in the attack on his party colleague. Biden regularly labels his opponent a threat to US democracy.

Biden remains determined

The US President continues to hold firm to his plans to be the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. In response to a question from NBC News about whether his plans have changed due to the withdrawal discussions in the past few days, the 81-year-old replied with a resolute "No."

Journalist Lester Holt asked Biden who he listens to regarding this very personal decision. Biden answered, "Myself." He added, "I'm old, but only three years older than Trump." His mental acuity is "damned good." He has accomplished more in three and a half years than any other president in a long time.
