Jimmy Carter wants to hold on until the US election
Former US President Jimmy Carter has been ailing for some time now. Yet, he remains determined to live until his 100th birthday - and a few days more. After all, he has one more important task ahead of him.
The 99-year-old former US President Jimmy Carter, despite his frailty, is not ready to leave the world yet. "I'm trying to hang on to vote for Kamala Harris," the Democrat said, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The election is on November 5th.
According to the report, his son Chip Carter recently asked him if he hoped to celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1st. The 99-year-old replied that he wanted to live long enough to vote for the likely Democratic candidate, his grandson Jason Carter told the Georgia-based newspaper. In Georgia, voting for the successor to Democratic US President Joe Biden begins on October 15th.
His grandfather, who has been receiving palliative care at home since February 2023, has been "more lively and interested in politics and the conflict in Gaza" recently, Jason Carter told the newspaper. The former peanut farmer and later Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who served from 1977 to 1981, is the oldest living former US president. His wife Rosalynn, with whom he was married for 77 years, passed away last November at the age of 96.
The 81-year-old Biden recently withdrew his candidacy for a second term under public pressure and proposed his 59-year-old Vice President Harris as the candidate. She is expected to run against former Republican President Donald Trump.
The Democrats, with former President Jimmy Carter expressing his intent, have a prominent supporter planning to vote in the upcoming election on November 5th. Amidst his desire to live until his 100th birthday, Carter, a Democrat, mentioned his wish to cast his vote for Kamala Harris.
