It seems that pro-Iranian groups seem to be the likely perpetrators of the assault on the American embassy in Baghdad.
A few days following a violent incident, the U.S. embassy annex situated at Baghdad International Airport was accused of being the source of the trouble by the American administration. This incident occurred on a Tuesday night, with reports suggesting it was the doing of Iranian-affiliated militias operating within Iraq. The U.S. embassy in Baghdad subsequently urged Iraqi authorities to shield U.S. installations and personnel, mentioning the right to self-defense and the responsibility to safeguard U.S. personnel all over the globe.
Subsequent to an attack on Tuesday night, the U.S. embassy in Baghdad announced that its auxiliary facilities in Baghdad had come under attack. There were no reported injuries. According to a statement issued by the Iraqi army, the blast occurred within the international airport's area, which serves as a base for the international coalition's advisors.
Immediately after the attack, a senior figure from Iraqi security services communicated to AFP news agency that two Grad missiles had been launched at the facility. One landed within the grounds of Iraq's anti-terror units, while the other impacted a base for the U.S.-led coalition combating the extremist militia, Islamic State (IS).
The U.S. diplomatic support facilities in Baghdad International Airport have faced multiple attacks, such as in January 2022. These services offer logistical assistance and medical aid. For the winter of 2023, mere weeks after the major conflict instigated by the Palestinian organization Hamas against Israel, which led to the Gaza war, pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria also targeted forces belonging to the international coalition fighting against IS with numerous drones and rockets.
After the attack on the U.S. embassy annex, the American administration strongly condemned the incident and demanded an immediate investigation. The attack resulted in significant damage to the auxiliary facilities, although thankfully, no personnel were harmed.
