computer repair - IT-Issue: Eurowings cancels flights before 15:00

The airline Eurowings is canceling all domestic German flights and flights to and from Great Britain with departure times before 3:00 PM due to persistent technical issues. A company spokesperson stated that this was to relieve pressure on the affected IT-system.

According to the company website, over 50 flights have been canceled as a result. Passengers affected by the cancellation of domestic flights are asked to book a train ticket independently and submit it for reimbursement, Eurowings announced. Once the issue is resolved, passengers will be rebooked onto alternative flights as soon as possible.

The airline claims to be affected by a large-scale global issue with an IT company. This has disrupted check-in and boarding processes. Online check-in is currently not possible. "All processes affected by the IT issue are outside of our control", it was stated.

A faulty software update caused widespread disruptions worldwide this morning. The software vendor Crowdstrike attributed the issue to a faulty update of the IT security system named "Falcon Sensor". The IT security firm announced the error had been fixed at noon and customers were referred to a download portal for a new update.

Despite the currently massive global IT issue, Eurowings plans to operate around 80 percent of its flight program, a spokesperson for the airline stated. Flights with a focus on domestic cancellations were being canceled to ease the load on the system and quickly redirect passengers to trains. However, delays and cancellations should be expected in the remainder of the day. Travelers are asked to check the website for updates.

  1. The persistent technical issues affecting Eurowings are not limited to Germany, as the airline operates in North Rhine-Westphalia and experiences cancellations of flights to the United Kingdom as well.
  2. Eurowings' decision to cancel flights is also influenced by the current computer breakdown, which is impacting various aspects of their Airline's technology, including check-ins and boarding processes.
  3. The computer breakdown at Eurowings has resulted in an EUrowings' spokesperson advising passengers to opt for train travel instead of flights if affected by domestic flight cancellations, as Eurowings will reimburse the train ticket costs.
  4. The disruptions in Eurowings' Air traffic are part of a larger global issue, affecting an IT company and leading to disturbances in air traffic across various airlines, including Eurowings.
  5. While a significant portion of its flight program will be operational, Eurowings acknowledges that delays and cancellations should be anticipated in the remainder of the day due to the widespread IT issue.
