Israel's High Court requires further explanation regarding detention facility

Following the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, the detention camp Sde Teiman was constructed. Reports suggest thousands of Palestinians are confined there, enduring supposedly inhumane treatment. The Israeli Supreme Court has now stepped in, demanding a report on the camp's conditions.

The Israeli Supreme Court has asked for a report from the authorities on the state of the Sde Teiman detention camp, set up for Palestinian militants. The High Court aims to gain insights into the detainees' meals, medical care, and personal hygiene facilities, as reported by Israeli media.

After the Hamas terror attack and other groups on October 7th of the previous year, the military set up the Sde Teiman camp near the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. Detainees and militants suspected during the Gaza War are held there for interrogation before court hearings.

No rights for "illegal combatants"?

Referred to as "illegal combatants" from an Israeli viewpoint, they supposedly haven't got the protections of a prisoner of war due to their membership in a terrorist organization. This practice is a source of international debate.

Among the detainees, numerous Palestinians are allegedly held based on faulty information or assessments.

Repeated claims of torture and brutality against the detainees have surfaced from former inmates, human rights organizations, and even former doctors. The detainees are said to have been beaten, sexually abused, injured, forced into painful positions for long periods, and experienced untreated wounds caused by prolonged handcuffing, with some even reportedly having amputations. The Israeli military refutes these allegations, stating there's no evidence of illicit practices.

Approximately 4000 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have spent varying lengths of time in Sde Teiman. Lately, the military has started transferring detainees to other detention facilities. Following a petition from several Israeli human rights organizations, the Supreme Court has now decided to request clarification.
