Israeli tanks roll into southern Gaza Strip
Recently, Israel's army announced that it intends to expand the fight against Hamas to the entire Gaza Strip. The announcement is now being followed by action. Eyewitnesses report sightings of dozens of tanks and troop carriers in the south of the Gaza Strip.
According to eyewitnesses, dozens of Israeli tanks, troop carriers and bulldozers have advanced into the southern Gaza Strip. The military vehicles entered the Palestinian territory near the town of Chan Junis, the witnesses said. The tanks reached the Salaheddin road. This important traffic axis leads from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army announced on Sunday evening that it had expanded its offensive in the fight against the radical Islamic Hamas in the "entire Gaza Strip". "The army is operating everywhere where Hamas has strongholds," said army spokesman Daniel Hagari. While Israeli attacks had been concentrated on the north of the Palestinian territory for weeks, the south also came under heavy fire at the weekend, including the area around Chan Junis.
More than 1200 people killed in Israel
The war between Israel and Hamas has now been going on for more than eight weeks. On 7 October, hundreds of fighters from Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, invaded Israel and committed atrocities, mainly against civilians. According to Israeli reports, around 1,200 people were killed in Israel and around 240 people were taken hostage.
In response, Israel began a massive attack on targets in the densely populated Gaza Strip. According to the latest information from Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, more than 15,500 people have been killed in the Palestinian territory since then, most of them civilians.
