The military vehicles entered the Palestinian territory near the town of Chan Junis, the witnesses said. The tanks reached the Salaheddin road. This important traffic axis leads from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army announced on Sunday evening that it had expanded its offensive in the fight against the radical Islamic Hamas in the "entire Gaza Strip". "The army is operating everywhere where Hamas has strongholds," said army spokesman Daniel Hagari. While Israeli attacks had been concentrated on the north of the Palestinian territory for weeks, the south also came under heavy fire at the weekend, including the area around Chan Junis.
More than 1200 people killed in Israel
The war between Israel and Hamas has now been going on for more than eight weeks.
