Israel wants to save babies in Al-Shifa clinic with incubators
While Israeli tanks have advanced right up to the largest hospital in Gaza, the situation inside the facility is devastating, according to the WHO. The hospital is no longer functioning and premature babies have to be taken out of the incubators. The Israeli military wants to help with incubators.
According to its military, Israel is organizing the delivery of incubators to the Gaza Strip. "The armed forces are currently coordinating the transfer of incubators from a hospital in Israel to Gaza," the Israeli army announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter). This would be one way of rescuing babies from the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.
The statement follows emergency calls from the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip regarding its newborns as Israeli ground troops approach and the generators run out of fuel. According to the report, the director of the Al-Shifa Clinic, Mohammad Abu Salamia, declared that the hospital was no longer operational due to the lack of fuel. As a result, the premature babies had to be taken out of the incubators and the remaining staff are now doing everything they can to keep them alive. "We wrap them in foil and put hot water next to them to keep them warm," explained Abu Salamia. According to the doctor, several children have died in the children's ward in recent days.
According to the UN, up to 10,000 people are being held in the building. Eyewitnesses reported fierce fighting around the huge complex of the Al-Shifa hospital. Israeli tanks are reportedly only a few meters away from the access road. Following the advance of Israeli tanks towards the hospital, US President Joe Biden called on Israel to show consideration for the hospital in the fight against the radical Islamic group Hamas. "The hospital must be protected," Biden told journalists at the White House. "It is my hope and expectation that there will be less intrusive actions with regard to the hospital," said Biden. The USA was in contact with Israel about this.
Delivered fuel remains untouched
The World Health Organization (WHO) had already complained yesterday about "appalling conditions" in the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip. The constant shelling and bombardments in the region had exacerbated the already critical conditions. The number of patient deaths had risen considerably. The clinic no longer functions as a hospital.
The Israeli army accuses Hamas of having set up its military headquarters in tunnels under the largest hospital in the Palestinian territory. In addition, the Israeli military provided the hospital with 300 liters of fuel on Saturday. Pictures show a soldier placing the canisters near the clinic. According to Israeli reports, however, they are still untouched. According to the report, the Hamas terrorist organization forbids the clinic from using the fuel. Clinic director Abu Salamia denied this and said that the fuel provided would not even last for 30 minutes.
Mark Regev, chief advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Sky News that the clinic should use up the fuel before Israel supplies more. In addition, Regev once again called on the civilians in the hospital to leave the facility. "There is a road at the eastern exit of the hospital, and we have encouraged people to leave," he emphasized.
The ongoing 'Israel war' in Gaza has led to numerous casualties, including deaths in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military's failure to utilize the delivered fuel for the Al-Shifa Clinic, the largest hospital in Gaza, has further complicated the situation. The clinic's director, Mohammad Abu Salamia, claims that the fuel provided would not last for more than 30 minutes and that the clinic is no longer operating due to the lack of fuel, forcing premature babies to be removed from their incubators.
