Israel wants to establish a buffer zone to Gaza

Israel is still in the middle of the war against Hamas. And the Palestinian terrorist organization has not yet been defeated. Nevertheless, there are already plans for afterwards. To prevent a repeat of October 7, a buffer zone is to be created - probably at the expense of the already cramped Gaza Strip.

Israel wants to establish a buffer zone in the border area with the Gaza Strip after the Gaza war. "Israel will need a security envelope", said Mark Regev, the Israeli government's security advisor, to journalists in Tel Aviv. "There will no longer be a situation where Hamas people are on the border that they can cross and kill our civilians." He did not give more specific details about the planned security zone. However, it is assumed that it will be at the expense of the Gaza Strip.

Regev stated that Israel had no interest in reoccupying or permanently dominating the Gaza Strip. At the same time, he said that Israel must maintain control over the security of the coastal strip after the war.

He reaffirmed the goal of ending Hamas' rule in the Gaza Strip after 16 years and destroying the terrorist organization's military capabilities. The aim was to "create a new reality in Gaza so that Israeli civilians no longer have to live in constant fear of Hamas, in fear that they will cross the border and slaughter their children". Regev admitted that Hamas was far from being defeated. "They are still firing rockets at Israel and still control large parts of the Gaza Strip." Israel still has "a lot of work to do".

The latest Gaza war was triggered by the worst massacre in Israel's history, committed by terrorists from the Gaza Strip on October 7 in Israel near the border. More than 1200 people were killed and around 240 hostages were taken to Gaza. Israel responded with massive air strikes, a blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched a ground offensive at the end of October. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 15,000 people were killed in the process. Following the end of the ceasefire on Friday, new high numbers of civilian casualties are feared, particularly in the south of the coastal strip.

The buffer zone proposed by Israel is expected to be situated along the Israel-Gaza Strip border. Despite the ongoing Israel war against Hamas, Mark Regev, Israel's security advisor, emphasized the need for a security envelope to prevent future cross-border attacks.
