Israel organizes evacuations in Han Junis

In Gaza Strip, the city of Hanunis is once again at the center of the war. Israel reports shelling by Hamas from a part of the designated humanitarian zone and retaliates with attacks. The population is urged to leave the area.

In light of a military operation, the Israeli army has ordered the evacuation of the eastern part of Hanunis in the southern Gaza Strip. "Due to significant terrorist activities and rocket fire towards Israel from the eastern part of the humanitarian zone, it is now dangerous to stay there," the statement read. The army is "preparing to take violent action against terrorist organizations," and therefore calls on the population in the eastern neighborhoods of Hanunis to "temporarily withdraw," it added.

At the beginning of the year, Israel began a months-long operation in Hanunis. Wide parts of the city were destroyed, and tens of thousands of people fled to an area designated as a humanitarian zone. "At this point, the humanitarian zone is being adjusted," the army declared regarding the latest evacuation. The adjustment will be "in accordance with precise information indicating that the Hamas has established terrorist infrastructure in the area designated as a humanitarian area," it added.

Residents of the eastern part of Hanunis, as well as adjacent towns and villages, reported shelling and panic this morning. "We are in the midst of air, tank, and drone attacks," said the 27-year-old Yussef Abu Taimah. He had seen "wounded and dead" people being transported on donkeys and tricycles to the hospital. According to the health ministry controlled by Hamas, at least 14 people were killed by Israeli army attacks this morning.

The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by a brutal attack by Hamas fighters and other militant Palestinian groups on Israel on October 7. According to Israeli reports, 1195 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.
