Is the investment in colostrum supplements justified? Opinions from specialists on this fad
"This substance is jam-packed with nutrients, but it also contains non-nutrient molecules, like biologically active compounds that offer protection, mentioned Smilowitz, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Smilowitz's research focus lies in breastfeeding, nutrition, lactation, and the microbiome.
These nutrients and compounds include immunoglobulins (or antibodies), white blood cells, vitamin A, magnesium, copper, zinc, growth factors, and several other essential components for kickstarting life, such as boosting the immune system's strength and enhancing gut structure, experts claimed.
These antibodies help strengthen leaky, permeable intestines by sealing the gut and preventing harmful bacteria or pathogens from moving into the bloodstream uncontrollably, Smilowitz stated. Colostrum gives an infant protection during a sensitive stage.
However, a significant surge in colostrum supplements consumption for adults has been observed recently, with a few questionable health claims, stated Caroline Thomason, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Virginia, via email.
Colostrum supplements, derived mainly from cows, have gained popularity for their presumed abilities to increase immunity, enhance gut health, and boost athletic performance, asserted Dr. Lisa Young, a registered dietitian nutritionist and adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University, via email.
Colostrum is collected from dairy cows within the first few days after birth, then processed and pasteurized for human consumption, coming in forms like powders, pills, and liquids, or even as an enema. The delicate process of preserving bioactive compounds while ensuring safety is important, as Thomason pointed out.
The rise of social media influencers talking about colostrum supplements seems to have contributed to this surge in consumption in recent times, Thomason further added.
Celebrities have also promoted colostrum as a health tool - Sofia Richie included it in the $21 smoothie she launched with the upscale California-based grocery store Erewhon, and The Kid LAROI did the same.
However, it's crucial to remember that while these benefits sound appealing, the research on colostrum is still mostly new and inconclusive, Thomason concluded.
The impact of colostrum on human health
People tend to seek out colostrum for health advantages due to gut inflammation, making their physiology similar to that of a vulnerable infant, Smilowitz explained.
This inflammation can stem from ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, chronic infections, chronic diarrhea, HIV, or the after-effects of chemotherapy or radiation.
There is some initial evidence suggesting that colostrum can support immunity and gut health, primarily in people with weakened immune systems or intestinal permeability issues, Thomason asserted. Some small studies have discovered that colostrum may promote the growth of intestinal cells and strengthen gut walls.
Other research has hinted at potential benefits for respiratory tract infections. One 12-week study of 35 adult distance runners found that taking a daily colostrum supplement boosted certain antibody levels in their saliva by 79%, possibly enhancing their resistance to infections. Similar results were seen in a separate study of 29 male cyclists, with a daily dose of 10 grams for five weeks linked to less decline in immune cells following exercise and a reduced risk of respiratory infection.
It's vital to note that the results of these studies only indicated changes in immune biomarkers, not necessarily improved events within the immune system, such as getting sick, said Julie Stefanski, a Pennsylvania-based registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"And then often, the dose used in the study is far beyond what's available in a supplement," Stefanski added.
There are also anecdotal reports suggesting improvements in skin health and exercise recovery, but scientific research in these areas remains scarce. No strong evidence supports claims of weight loss or reversing age-related changes.
There's also the issue of who funds the research. Most of the research on colostrum supplements has been sponsored by supplement or dairy companies or health experts affiliated with them, which haven't been widely replicated, experts stated. Some studies have even shown mixed results, Smilowitz added.
Before you buy it
As with any supplement, consulting a healthcare expert before beginning and following the manufacturer's instructions are essential, said Thomason, particularly for people with gastrointestinal conditions.
Colostrum supplementation is generally considered safe for most people, but there are risks, particularly for folks with milk allergies. Large doses could potentially result in digestive discomfort, such as bloating or diarrhea, Thomason warned. Children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking colostrum.
"Plus, these supplements are pricey, and you may not notice any health benefits at all," Thomason concluded.
The cost of colostrum supplements can range from about $15 to $200 per bottle, depending mainly on the quality – which is crucial since a higher caliber means a lower risk of contamination, Young stated."
Even though newborn calves benefit most from their initial dose of colostrum, the one collected on the third or fourth day is actually more beneficial than the one obtained a week later. The collection process's sensitivity often makes cheaper supplements less effective, as pointed out by Stefanski.
In regards to colostrum sources, those from grass-fed and pasture-raised cows are superior to those from conventionally raised ones.
Navigating the unregulated world of colostrum supplements by the US Food and Drug Administration can be a challenge when determining which ones offer better value for money.
To find the best-quality colostrum supplements, Keri Gans, a New York registered dietitian nutritionist, suggests looking for products that have undergone third-party testing for quality and purity.
Manufacturers' websites or customer service representatives can provide additional information not included in the packaging, experts added.
Though colostrum has potential health benefits, it's essential to remember it's not a miracle cure. Further research is required to fully grasp its effects and long-term safety, according to Young.
It's crucial to emphasize a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep for overall health and wellbeing, as asserted by Thomason.

Despite the promising research on colostrum's impact on health, it's important to note that the evidence is still largely inconclusive, and the benefits may not extend to areas like weight loss or skin health. (follows from the text)
