After the election - Iran's new president wants to stick to anti-Israel course

Massud Peseschkian, Iran's newly elected president, will maintain Iran's anti-Israel course. According to the Isna news agency, in a letter to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, he declared, "Iran's support for the resistance front against the illegitimate zionist regime will be continued with great emphasis." He hoped that groups like Hezbollah would not allow Israel to "continue its war-mongering and criminal policy against Palestine and other countries in the region," his letter further read.

Iran is Hezbollah's most significant supporter in Lebanon. The Shia militia fights politically and militarily against Israel. It is part of Iran's "Axis of Resistance."

Peseschkian, considered relatively moderate in Iranian politics, who defeated a hardliner in the runoff election on Friday, is expected to be sworn in around the beginning of August. The extent of Peseschkian's influence on foreign policy is predicted to depend significantly on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the most powerful figure in the state.

Despite his relatively moderate rhetoric for Iranian standards, Peseschkian aligned himself with the powerful Revolutionary Guards during the campaign and praised, for instance, the drone and rocket attack on Israel's arch-enemy in April.

  1. Massud Peseschkian expressed his support for Hezbollah's role in opposing Israel's actions against Palestine and other regional countries, as mentioned in his letter to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
  2. In the context of Iran's ongoing support for Hezbollah in Lebanon, Isna reported that the newly elected president, Massud Peseschkian, reaffirmed Iran's commitment to the "resistance front" against Israel.
  3. The Iran-Syria-Hezbollah alliance, also known as the "Axis of Resistance," received a boost with Massud Peseschkian's election, further emphasizing Iran's backing for Hezbollah's conflicts against Israel.
  4. Hassan Nasrallah praised Massud Peseschkian for his consistent stance on supporting Hezbollah during the campaign, demonstrating that even a relatively moderate Iranian president can align with hardline positions on Israel.
