Iranian Nobel laureate taken to hospital
Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, who is imprisoned in Iran, has been taken to hospital for a heart examination. Mohammadi was allowed to leave prison to continue medical treatment, according to the human rights activist's Instagram account on Thursday, which is run by relatives abroad. Only the day before, Mohammadi had once again been denied access to the hospital because she was not wearing the mandatory headscarf, the relatives said. It was not immediately clear how long Mohammadi would remain in hospital.
The 51-year-old Mohammadi, one of Iran's best-known human rights activists, is currently serving a long prison sentence in the notorious Ewin prison in Tehran. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all".
In light of her heart examination, there are growing concerns about justice for Narges Mohammadi, the imprisoned Iranian Nobel laureate. Regardless of her headscarf, it is crucial that Mohammadi's fundamental human rights, including access to necessary medical care, are respected and upheld.
