iOS 18 Brings Enjoyment Back to Messaging and Enhances Its Functionality

During the Apple WWDC 2024 keynote, the company unveiled more details about what's new in iOS 18. One of the apps that's receiving a significant update is Messages. The app will receive a boatload of new features, aiming to make iMessage more exciting and convenient. The new Messages enhancements will come with a public update by Fall 2024, while Public Beta users can try them as early as July 2024. Here's a rundown of the exciting changes coming to Messages this year:

Tapback Upgrade

Tapback, the Messages feature allowing you to respond to an iMessage with a question mark or "ha ha," for example, is getting a refresh in iOS 18. You'll now be able to use any emoji to react to a message, just like on WhatsApp and Instagram. Tapback icons are also getting a makeover and will be more vibrant.

Schedule Messages

Now, you can schedule your messages to send at a specific time, something that's not available on other popular messaging apps like WhatsApp. With this feature, you can write a message and set it to send at a later time - for instance, the next day.

Text Formatting

iMessage is about to get some spice with classical text formatting. Apple is adding support for bold, underlined, and italicized text in Messages with iOS 18.

Text Effects Galore

You can now choose to apply effects to just a portion of your text message rather than the entire message. These effects include jitter, shake, bounce, and more.

Message from Satellite

Diving deeper into Apple's Emergency SOS calling feature, which uses satellite access to make emergency calls, Messages is also getting this functionality. You'll soon be able to send iMessages, emojis, and Tapbacks using Satellites, even for SMS.

RCS on iPhone: It's Happening

We've known that RCS, or Rich Communication Services, was coming to the iPhone this year, but we didn't know when. We're certain now that it's launching with iOS 18. While the details are scant, it's safe to say RCS is on the way.
