Investigation into Nürburgring Pit Explosion with 22 Injured is Underway
Following an explosion in the pit lane at the Nürburgring, which injured 22 people, police are conducting a high-intensity investigation. Today, the Criminal Police (Kripo) are on-site, searching for the cause, among other things, as stated by a police spokesperson in the morning. The affected box remains closed.
During a test drive for the NLS4 on Friday evening, an explosion occurred behind Box 27 in the pit lane, according to organizers. This resulted in 22 injuries, with three being severe. One person was reported as being critically injured. The remaining minor injuries included concussions. Initial findings suggest that a compressed air cylinder may have exploded, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Nürburgring Race to Proceed as Planned
After initial treatment, the injured were transported to hospitals by four rescue helicopters and several ambulances. Chaplains were also on-site. The Kripo is now investigating.
After consultations with the parties involved, the organizers decided to proceed with the race. However, teams and their drivers have the option to decide whether they wish to participate in the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS) race.
