schools - into the summer holidays

For approximately 850,000 pupils and pupils in Hessen, the summer holidays begin today. Culture Minister Armin Schwarz (CDU) wishes parents, children, and teachers a "relaxing time and lots of fun with friends and family," as the minister told the dpa.

Before the start of the holidays, there are reports at the 1,800 schools in Hessen. If they go as planned, the Education and Welfare Association recommends a calm discussion. "Children and young people are more than the sum of their grades," said the chairman of the Hessen branch, Stefan Wesselmann.

For poor grades, there may be valid reasons. Sometimes poor grades are a cry for help. Instead of punishing a child or giving them extra tutoring hours, parents should take their concerns and needs seriously and work together with the child on the causes.

If legal questions arise after the report card handover, for example, parents can contact the state school offices. The hotlines are staffed on Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. However, each school office has its own phone number.

Armin Schwarz, being a member of the CDU in Hessen, expressed his wishes for a relaxing summer break for children, teachers, and parents. Despite the summer holidays, the importance of education continues to be discussed in Wiesbaden's 1,800 schools. Stefan Wesselmann, the chairman of the Education and Welfare Association in Hessen, emphasized the holistic view of children and their grades. Regarding poor grades, he suggested treating them as potential signs of distress instead of punishment or extra tutoring. Armin Schwarz, in his capacity as Culture Minister, might encourage such an empathetic approach towards children's learning during the summer holidays or even at school in Germany.
