Altered Fernsehturm - Initiative collects money for struggling 'Telemoritz'}

The tower marked for demolition, the old Telemoritz TV Tower in Hannover, may have a chance of survival. An initiative by event organizer Daniel Pflieger and music producer Mousse T. has reportedly collected around 8 million Euro in sponsorship pledges, according to the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" (Friday). Both aim to give the tower a future as a venue for concerts and special events.

In the tower, music bands are supposed to perform, with extremely limited places for concert attendees to be raffled off, and the tower also to be used for advertising.

"It's about creating a lighthouse, in a figurative sense, for Hannover," Mousse T. told the newspaper. "This unusual building offers the opportunity to combine art and culture, social and societal aspects."

Pflieger said: "We can see from the various reactions to our project that almost everyone in Hannover has an emotional bond to the tower." The tower was built in 1959 and is 141 meters high. It has been owned by Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge since 2000.

According to a 2023 report, the tower's stability is "critical." Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge plans to demolish the tower if no other solution is found. Logos of the automaker have already been removed from the highest platform, 102 meters above the bus station.

In 2020, a concrete block the size of a brick fell from the tower, around 70 meters high. No one was injured. Since then, industrial climbers have often been seen controlling the tower's facade.

The report estimates that Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge would need around 23 million Euro for the necessary stabilization repairs. By October, the automaker and the city of Hannover are supposed to make a decision on whether to demolish or sell the tower.
