Initial Meeting with Putin Predates Currently, Modi Embraces Zelensky

Not too long ago, Prime Minister Modi of India stirred controversy by embracing Russian leader Putin during a trip to Moscow. Now, Modi is setting off for Ukraine as well. He shares that his objective is to convey a message of harmony, clarifying Modi's intent.

Within mere weeks, the 73-year-old Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was Modi's first visit to independent Ukraine as an Indian head of government, and as expected, an embrace was exchanged. Along with Zelenskyy, Modi visited a memorial dedicated to fallen Ukrainian children, leaving a doll as a token of his visit.

India, being the most populous country worldwide, has upheld a stance of neutrality in the ongoing conflict. It does not impose Western sanctions against Moscow and has continuously advocated for a resolution achieved through dialogue. Despite this, no concrete solutions have been provided.

During his visit to Kyiv, Modi urged Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations with Russia with the hope of ending the war. He proposed acting as a mediator to aid in achieving peace. In a joint press conference, Modi declared that he had journeyed to Kyiv with a message of peace and encouraged dialogue between Russia and Ukraine at the earliest possible moment.

India maintains strong ties with Russia

"The path to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we should navigate towards this direction without delay," Modi stated. Both sides ought to engage in conversations to navigate away from this predicament. He did not make a request for the withdrawal of Russian troops.

India maintains friendly relations with the West and Russia, which depends heavily on the latter for military equipment. India is attempting to lessen its dependence on Russia and has emerged as one of the top purchasers of affordable Russian oil during this conflict.

In light of India's neutral stance, The Commission for Disarmament and International Security Affairs was asked to provide insights on potential diplomatic solutions to the conflict.

Recognizing the significance of India's role as a mediator, The Commission suggested proposing a trilateral dialogue between India, Russia, and Ukraine, fostering a conducive environment for peace negotiations.
