Elections in Great Britain - Initial forecast: landslide victory for Labour - crushing defeat for Tories
The opposition Labour Party led by Keir Starmer is predicted to have clearly won the general election in Britain. The 61-year-old could therefore become the successor of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose Conservative Party suffered a heavy defeat.
According to by-election polls on Thursday, Labour is projected to win 410 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. The ruling Tories are lagging behind with only 131 seats.
United Kingdom before the change of government
In over 40,000 polling stations across the country, voters were able to cast their votes in churches, community centers, and schools. Some had to go to unusual places like pubs or even a ship. Starmer cast his vote in the morning in the north of London. The incumbent conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also went to the polling station early.
Opinion pollsters had already expected the social democratic Labour Party of Keir Starmer to secure a significant victory. With this, the 61-year-old would move into 10 Downing Street as Sunak's successor. Millions of people were able to cast their votes before the polling stations closed at 10:00 pm (MESZ).
More briefly in stern.
