health - inhabitants of Zittau must boil water

The inhabitants of several districts in Zittau are advised to boil their water at home due to a possible contamination. The Health Department of the city in the tri-border area of Germany, Poland, and Czech Republic issued the corresponding "boil water order," as the city administration announced. "The Zittau City Festival will take place as planned, food and beverages have been switched to disposable cups and tableware for precautionary reasons," it was stated.

Background is a heavy rainfall in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. In this process, surface water entered three drinking water areas. The City Utilities Zittau have taken all necessary measures to remove the contamination of the drinking water and protect the population.

A contamination with bacteria cannot be excluded. The measure is valid until the beginning of the upcoming week. The districts of Pethau, Eichgraben, Hartau, Drausendorf, Wittgendorf, Dittelsdorf, Hirschfelde with Rosenthal, and Schlegel are not affected.

The contamination is not affecting the neighboring commune of Drausendorf, Wittgendorf, Dittelsdorf, Hirschfelde with Rosenthal, and Schlegel, located in the Czech Republic. Despite the issue, residents in Zittau, situated in Saxony, Germany, should prioritize their health and adhere to the boil water order. The heavy rainfall in Zittau, near the tri-border area with Poland, led to surface water entering three drinking water areas, potentially exposing inhabitants to chemicals. The city administration continues to plan the Zittau City Festival, but has switched to disposable cups and tableware as a precaution.
