Individual from Germany found guilty of killing their disabled child
A Swiss court slapped an eight-year prison sentence on a German couple for the intentional manslaughter of their three-year-old daughter. Despite the prosecution's push for a murder conviction and a 18-year sentence, the court found the parents guilty of inflicting fatal harm intentionally.
The couple confessed to administering drugs to their disabled daughter and suffocating her, aiming to 'liberate' her. Their legal representative argued that the parents were under extreme emotional burden. They have the right to appeal the decision.
The little girl was born with a brain disorder and needed extensive medical care. During the trial, the parents claimed their daughter was in perpetual agony. Brain disorders target the cerebral cortex. The family resided in Hägglingen, about 25 kilometers south of Waldshut-Tiengen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Waldshut.
Drug-laced porridge
The couple had mixed Ecstasy into their daughter's porridge. Once she ceased responding to stimuli, the father suffocated the child with a cloth. The family contacted emergency services the following morning, claiming their daughter was lying motionless in bed.
Besides the manslaughter conviction, the parents were also found guilty of an attempted murder charge from a year prior. They had dosed the daughter's porridge with sleeping pills on that occasion. The couple was also barred from entering the country for ten years each. The child's grandmother, accused of helping the mobile offense, was found not guilty.
The Swiss authorities were involved in the case as the family resided in Hägglingen, a town in the Baden-Württemberg district of Waldshut.
