Increasingly, pupils hailing from migratory backgrounds are commonplace.

Over the past five years, there's been a notable rise in the number of students with an immigrant background in Germany. Currently, over a quarter of these students come from migratory backgrounds. On the other hand, among teachers, this figure is significantly lower.

This year, roughly 29% of students in general schools in Germany hail from migratory backgrounds, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Among teachers, the proportion drops to just 11%. Approximately 25% of the general population in Germany has a similar background.

If someone has a migratory background, they or both parents moved to Germany after 1950, as the statisticians pointed out. Another 12% of students have only one parent with an immigration history, while a majority of 59% do not have a migratory background. Among teachers, 5% have one immigrant parent, while an overwhelming 84% do not.

Both in the student and teacher populations at general schools, the proportion of people with a migratory background has seen an increase over the past five years, as per the statisticians. In 2018, it stood at 26% among students, which was a decrease of 3 percentage points from the previous year (29%). Among teachers, the figure was 9% in 2018, which was a decrease of 2 percentage points from the previous year.

The data comes from the Microcensus, according to the Federal Statistical Office. In this survey, approximately 1% of the population in Germany is questioned each year. The data is derived from the participants' self-disclosures, and to make statements about the entire population from the collected data, the data is extrapolated using the edge values of the population forecast, as mentioned.

The Commission has acknowledged the increased proportion of students and teachers with migratory backgrounds in Germany over the past five years, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. In order to address the imbalance between the student and teacher populations with migratory backgrounds, the Commission is considering implementing programs to attract and retain more teachers from these backgrounds.
