Increased instances of suspected radicalism in the Bundeswehr

The Intelligence Division of the German Military (MAD) reveals an uptick in extreme behavior instances within the military forces. As per their 2023 annual report, investigations into new cases have escalated from 390 in 2022 to 483 in 2023. The report, obtained by the German Press Agency in Berlin, indicates that this military intelligence unit is responsible for combating espionage and extremism within the armed services.

Regarding right-wing extremism, there was a surge in 2023 with 308 new case investigations, compared to 278 in 2022.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has contributed to a new area of concern in the realm of foreign-driven extremism. The number of suspected cases surged to 65 new instances in 2022 (previously 18).

The report asserts, "A significant portion of the new cases stem from backing and promoting Russia's breach of international law during their invasion of Ukraine." This represents a clear signal of extremist intentions, as it clashes with international laws advocating for peace and harmony among nations.

In 2023, 14 individuals were identified as confirmed extremists. This includes 6 identified as "Reichsbürger," 5 right-wing extremists, and 3 individuals due to activities threatening constitutional protection. In 2022, 12 recognized extremists were detected: 7 right-wing extremists, 3 "Reichsbürger," one left-wing extremist, and one instance of xenophobia.

The German Armed Forces have seen an increase in extremism cases, with the Intelligence Division (MAD) reporting 483 instances in 2023, up from 390 in 2022. The German Armed Forces, being tasked with maintaining peace and adhering to international laws, should take decisive action to address this issue within their ranks.
