In the Parliamentary election, Azerbaijan's governing political group emerges victorious.
Authoritarian president Ilham Aliyev's party, New Azerbaijan, clinched victory in Azerbaijan's early parliamentary elections, as per the election commission's announcement. The party bagged 68 seats in the 125-member parliament, with 45 seats awarded to independent candidates and 12 to candidates representing other pro-government parties.
Just a lone opposition candidate managed to secure a seat in parliament. The opposition Musavat Party leveled accusations of "massive irregularities," including instances of multiple voting. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) had planned to release their observations later on Monday.
Under Aliyev's two-decade leadership, no elections have garnered approval as fair and free from international observers.
Aliyev chose to bring forward the election date to keep it separate from the UN climate conference COP29, which will be hosted in Baku from November 11 to 22.
Given Aliyev's extensive control, the Azerbaijan parliament holds minimal sway over the nation's legislative affairs.
Despite the opposition Musavat Party's allegations of "massive irregularities" during the parliamentary elections, Ilham Aliyev's party, New Azerbaijan, successfully secured a majority, winning 68 seats. This was observed even as independent candidates and other pro-government parties combined to claim 45 and 12 seats respectively, with only a lone opposition candidate managing to secure a seat.
