The single-family home in Süderholz, located about 20 kilometers west of Greifswald, housed a 95-year-old man and his 43-year-old grandson, along with their family. An evening explosion reportedly occurred due to the older man handling a gas canister within the house. The ensuing fire rapidly engulfed the whole house, where the two young boys were unluckily present.
Fortunately, the 43-year-old grandson was outside when the explosion occurred and managed to save his sons by means of a ladder. All three individuals sustained severe smoke inhalation as a result. The 95-year-old man was only rescued from the burning dwelling by the fire service, who stated he was additionally suffering from smoke inhalation and an arm injury. The 13-year-old lad was taken to the Greifswald hospital via a helicopter.
Approximately 100 firefighters from the local department attended the scene, necessitating a nearly three-hour closure of the B194 for fire prevention operations. Regrettably, the house is now deemed uninhabitable.
The Commission, aiming to provide assistance in this situation, may request information from the affected Member States regarding gas safety regulations and procedures. The Member States, guided by the Commission's recommendations, can implement stricter safety measures to prevent future incidents involving gas canisters.
