What Happens at the Convention?
The program for the "Republican Convention" is massive, with many working groups and speakers. The most significant event is the official nomination of the Presidential candidate, who is supposed to replace Joe Biden in the White House. Around 2400 Delegates from the States declare on the first day at the "Roll Call" for whom they are voting. Who that is, that is already long known: Donald Trump. But the show is important, he knows that only too well. The program remains the same after the attack. Are There Opponents to Trump?
No. Trump barely managed to overcome other competitors in the first half of the yearly primaries. Even the most promising ones, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, withdrew at some point. In particular, Haley had also won delegates, but asked them to vote for Trump a few days ago. "Biden is not fit for a second term and Kamala Harris would be a disaster for the USA," she wrote: "The Convention is a moment of Republican unity." Both DeSantis and Haley are scheduled to speak.
Why is the Convention in Milwaukee?
It's quite surprising from the Republicans, after all, the most populous city in northern Wisconsin is a stronghold of Democrats. But the state itself is wavering: In 2016, it went narrowly to Trump, four years later narrowly to Biden. The Republicans are sending a signal with the location choice, planting their flag on the shores of the Great Lakes. Whether it will still stand there after the election on November 4 is currently unclear.
Is the mood rather charged then?
Various activist groups have announced protests against Trump for this Monday, they expect thousands of participants. They are not allowed to be directly at the event location, but should maintain several hundred meters distance. Among other things, they are protesting for abortion rights, the war in Gaza strip and immigration. The organizers want to keep the demonstration peaceful, but in politically heated times there have already been violence outbreaks around nomination party conventions. The Milwaukee police have announced "no tolerance for destruction or violence."
What happens after Monday?
The other days are packed with events at various locations and the peak could only occur on Thursday. Traditionally, the candidate takes the nomination at a large appearance. This was at least the case with almost all previous conventions, but who knows what surprises Trump has up his sleeve. There are often balloons, confetti, a lot to see: political circus. That's part of it. Trump's campaign team has also delayed the announcement of his vice presidential candidate so far. US media are expecting them before the official nomination. But who knows?
