In Bulgaria there are plenty of heatwaves and there's no end in sight
In extreme heat in Bulgaria, firefighters and volunteers are fighting several forest and field fires. The southeastern part of the Balkan country has been hit the hardest, as reported by Bulgarian media on Sunday. There, more than 7300 hectares of forest and agriculture have already burned, according to official figures. No people were injured.
The fires in the Swilengrad region, where a state of emergency was declared in some places, could spread to Turkey, as reported by the private TV station bTV in Sofia. The army was also deployed to fight fires in the Plovdiv region in the south. Traffic was rerouted due to a fire parallel to the highway to Varna on the Black Sea.
Meteorologists do not see an end to Bulgaria's first major heatwave of the summer in the forecast. Temperatures are expected to rise further above 40 degrees Celsius in many places in the coming days.
Also, concerned about potential cross-border impacts, authorities in Turkey have been closely monitoring the heath fires in neighboring Bulgaria. In view of this situation, Turkish officials have issued warnings to its citizens living near the Bulgarian border. The end of these heath fires and the subsequent relief from the current heatwave is yet to be seen in both countries.
