- In an emergency situation, mother successfully rescues struggling child: "I utilized all my power to keep her afloat"
In the turbulent chaos of a storm, the luxurious yacht "Bayesian" was flipped upside down during the Montagn night off the Sicilian coast, leaving 20 individuals stranded, including Charlotte Golunski, 38, and her infant daughter. Golunski shared her harrowing experience with Italian newspaper "La Repubblica."
She recounted her heroic act of saving her baby from the water's grasp, using all her strength to keep her head above the surface and her arms extended to prevent drowning. The horror was all-encompassing; darkness surrounded them and kept her eyes from staying open. Her cries for help were met only by the cacophony of other passengers' screams.
The 50-meter vessel was owned by Mike Lynch, a British tech billionaire. His 18-year-old child, along with four other passengers, have yet to be found. As per British media sources, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International Bank, and Chris Morvillo, a popular lawyer from Clifford Chance, were also among the missing individuals. Rescue teams managed to save 15 people and recovered one body.
Sunken Superyacht: Six souls still missing
Golunski shared her story with another Italian newspaper, "(Giornale Di Sicilia)", explaining that she momentarily lost her baby in the churning sea and quickly lifted her daughter above the waves. "I held her tightly as the raging sea roared around us. So many were screaming." Miraculously, the lifeboat was deployed, and eleven individuals were able to board it.
Following the incident, Golunski and her daughter were taken to a children's hospital in Palermo, where they received only minor injuries, based on media reports.
Rescue operations continue, with coast guard and fire department personnel still searching for the six missing individuals. As of now, four ships, a coast guard helicopter, and a fire department diving team have been dedicated to the search. The submerged giant sailing yacht lies at a depth of 49 meters on the ocean floor. According to Italian news outlets, rescue divers have spotted bodies in the cabins through broken portholes.
