In a single month, Harris accumulates an impressive sum of half a billion dollars.
Kamala Harris and her campaign team have raked in an impressive $540 million in donations since the beginning of her bid for the Vice Presidency, as per their own statements. This apex figure was tagged as a "record-breaking" achievement. The Democratic Party convention in Chicago last week saw an influx of over $80 million in contributions. The bulk of the funds came flowing in post-Harris' speech on Thursday evening.
Taking the lead, a third of these donations came from first-time donors, suggesting wide-spread support among the party's core base. Notably, six out of ten newcomers contributing to the campaign were women, as reported by Harris' team. However, these figures are yet to be authenticated, pending the submission of the official financial report by the campaign team to the relevant administrative bodies.
U.S. elections are notoriously expensive affairs. The much-talked-about 2020 election contest between Joe Biden and Donald Trump was the most expensive ever, costing a whopping $14.7 billion. To stay afloat and make a significant impact, candidates must have sufficient funds. As of the end of July, all candidates had collectively amassed over $1.5 billion in donations, as per Open Secrets' data. Large donors often play a decisive role in elections, ceding their candidates hundreds of millions of dollars.
Harris-Walz cap goes viral
Following Joe Biden's announcement of his withdrawal from the presidential race in mid-July and his subsequent nomination of Harris as his replacement, the duo has gained immense popularity among Democrats, along with gubernatorial candidate Tim Walz.
A campaign hat, emblazoned with camouflage and featuring the candidates' names in orange, quickly found its way into the hearts of many supporters, leading to a sellout within a short span of time. In just four weeks, it generated a massive $4 million in revenue. The manufacturer revealed that it would have to boost the work hours of its employees to 60 hours a week to keep up with the soaring demand.
As Democrats hailed Harris as their official candidate at the Chicago convention with spectacular approval ratings, the race for the White House seat remains neck and neck. On November 5, the American public will cast their votes to decide who will become their next Commander-in-Chief.
To show their support for Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, many Democrats opted to donate, contributing significantly to their record-breaking fundraising total. With the Harris-Walz campaign hat becoming a popular item, its sales generated an additional $4 million in donations.
