In 202x, for the first time since 2016, the number of fatalities in Germany decreased.
Last year, Germany noted a decrease in fatalities for the first time since 2016. A total of 1,030,000 individuals passed away, representing a 3.6% decrease compared to the previous year, as per the Federal Statistical Office. Over half of the deceased females and approximately a third of the male deceased were 85 years or older at the time of death.
Just like in preceding years, cardiovascular diseases remained the leading cause of death, accounting for 33.9% of deaths. Cancer followed closely behind with 22.4%. Fortunately, the frequency of both causes decreased by 2.7% for cardiovascular diseases and 0.5% for cancer, according to statisticians.
In 2023, more people died due to influenza or pneumonia compared to the previous year, making up 2% of the total deaths - a figure that remains relatively constant since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, COVID-19 was cited as the primary cause of death in 2.5% of cases, showing a significant decrease of 50% compared to the previous year.
Unnatural causes, such as accidents or poisoning, were attributed to 4.8% of all deaths. Suicide accounted for 1% of these fatalities.
