In the global fight against hunger, there have been scarcely any progress in the past year due to conflicts, economic instability, and extreme weather events. According to a report published on a Wednesday by several UN organizations, approximately 9% of the world population suffered from hunger in 2023, which is roughly equivalent to the values of the two preceding years.

Between 713 and 757 million people were affected by hunger in the past year, as stated in the report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The distribution of hunger in the world is unequal: In Africa, 20% of the population was affected, while in the rest of the world, it was an average of 11%. The situation improved slightly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Approximately 2.33 billion people were affected by moderate or severe food insecurity, which forced them to occasionally skip meals - nearly 29% of the world population.

The UN's goal of ending hunger and undernourishment worldwide by 2030 is receding in light of the report. Estimates suggest that financing for food security and nutrition would require up to 3.975 trillion Dollars (around 3.67 billion Euros). The UN report proposes a large-scale reform for the financing of food security. Donors, international organizations, NGOs, and foundations must coordinate better, as stated.

The UN-Report highlights that 9% of the world population, equating to approximately 2.33 billion people, experienced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2023. This percentage, as mentioned in the report, is virtually the same as the figures from the two preceding years, showing minimal progress in combating global hunger.

Despite the UN's goal of eradicating hunger by 2030, the UN-Report revealed that 9% of the world population, which is equivalent to 11% in other parts of the world but 20% in Africa, continues to grapple with hunger.
