Imprisonment of Trump confidant Bannon ordered for July 1

A lower court has upheld: Previously close aide to ex-US President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, is set to report to jail imminently to serve a four-month stretch behind bars for disobeying Congress. Another trial for him is also scheduled, concerning allegations of deceit in relation to Trump's pet project.

Steve Bannon, a former trusted ally of ex-US President Donald Trump, was unsuccessful in delaying the initiation of his four-month prison term for disobeying Congress. The higher court dismissed the comparable petition from Bannon's legal team. They sought leniency from the judges to let their client stay free during his appeal against his conviction. However, a majority of the judges deemed Bannon's case was not worthy of an exemption to the common rule that defendants must serve their jail term following a guilty verdict. It is anticipated that Bannon will now file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court. The 70-year-old is predicted to check into a detention facility by July 1 to commence his four-month prison term.

Bannon was convicted in 2022 for two counts of disobeying Congress. Firstly, due to his refusal to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Secondly, due to his refusal to provide papers related to his role in Trump's attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss against Democrat Joe Biden.

Currently, Bannon is facing trial in another case. Accused alongside numerous accomplices, he is charged with fundraising for Trump's pet project, the border wall. Allegations suggest they collected a total of $25 million from over one hundred thousand supporters, with none of the wall being constructed. A fellow defendant of Bannon was already sentenced to four and a half years in prison for fraud in the prior year.
