Imprisoned opposition advocates in Belarus confront severe health issues.

Belarusian dissident Maria Kalesnikova, known for her opposition to strongman President Lukashenko, is reportedly in a dire state of health by her sister. She's been languishing in appalling conditions for over four years now, her sister Tatiana Chomich claimed in an interview, citing information from ex-inmates. Chomich emphasizes that the conditions are so harsh, no one could possibly endure such treatment for an extended period. She alleges her sibling is being subjected to both mental and physical abuse by the authorities. The Belarusian Interior Ministry declined to provide any details regarding Kalesnikova's prison situation.

Maria Kalesnikova, aged 42, emerged as a symbol of resistance during the 2020 demonstrations against President Lukashenko. She's currently serving an 11-year sentence for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. Lukashenko denies any existence of political prisoners within the country. Human rights organizations estimate that around 1400 individuals are being held as political prisoners. Kalesnikova's sister is petitioning for her sister's release through clemency.

Since the beginning of July, Lukashenko has granted freedom to 78 prisoners who had been arrested for their involvement in the protests. Kalesnikova would need to seek clemency for her release, as well, a process her sister isn't certain if she'd be open to. However, she encourages her sister to utilize this opportunity, should it become available.

The Belarusian authorities' harsh treatment towards Maria Kalesnikova, despite her role as a prominent figure of opposition, continues to raise concerns among human rights organizations. The petition for Maria's release through clemency highlights the importance of upholding fundamental human rights and the rule of law.
