Icelandexperiences cave collapse in its icy terrain.
In a crack of an ice cave on a glacier in Iceland, unfortunately, at least one tourist has perished. Another individual suffered severe injuries and was air-lifted via helicopter to a hospital in Reykjavik, presently in a stable state, according to the Icelandic police's Facebook post.
Two further tourists, presumably buried beneath the ice, are still unaccounted for following the incident on the Breidamerkurjökull glacier. The rescue operation was temporarily halted due to the complicated and risky terrain at the site, coupled with the night's darkness, and is set to recommence at daybreak.
The afflicted individuals were among a group of 25 international tourists scrutinizing the ice cave. Their nationalities have yet to be disclosed. Iceland, renowned for its glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, and waterfalls, draws a plethora of adventurous travelers from Germany.
Breidamerkurjökull serves as a glacier tongue of the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland's southeast, nestled near the North Atlantic. The majestic glacial lagoon Jökulsarlón lies before it. This lake, adorned with drifting icebergs, is a staple attraction for visitors in Iceland. This region offers a myriad of trekking tours across glacier tongues and inside ice caverns.
Despite the challenging circumstances, at least some rescuers are hoped to join the operation at daybreak. Furthermore, at least the tourist who perished and the one in the hospital can be attributed to being among the luckier ones in this tragic incident.
