Hunter Biden, son of the US president, faces trial for suspected gun law transgressions.
A jury selection process has kicked off in the state of Delaware for a trial against Hunter Biden, who stands accused of breaking US gun laws. He's alleged to have made false statements during a gun purchase in 2018 and hid his past drug addiction. If found guilty, he could face up to a quarter-century in prison. However, it's uncertain how the presiding judge would handle sentencing in this situation, given his lack of previous convictions.
On Monday, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, was nowhere to be seen at the court in Wilmington, but his wife, Jill, was present. In a statement, Biden Senior mentioned he'd remain silent about the case as President, but as a dad, he deeply cares for and trusts his son, adding that he respects his courage.
Hunter Biden's crooked dealings don't end there. In early December, he was also hit with tax evasion charges in California. These legal woes have been in the making for years. Negotiations with prosecutors to avoid a full-fledged courtroom confrontation in July 2023 failed. In August, US Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special prosecutor in this issue. In September and December, the indictments in Delaware and California followed suit.
In this heated election year, Hunter Biden's legal troubles add more fuel to the fire. Joe Biden, the Democratic president aiming for a second term, is up against Donald Trump, who was found guilty by a New York jury last week for illegal campaign financing. The sentencing announcement is yet to be made, with a maximum sentence of four years is possible. However, it's likely the sentence will either be suspended or involve paying a fine.
These legal issues are getting tossed around as political weapons in the ongoing race for the White House. Trump is already leveraging this verdict to raise money for his campaign. The ex-president, entangled in various legal issues, denounces this as a witch hunt. Even if convicted under the law, he can still set his sights for the presidency in November.
