Orban takes over EU presidency with Trump slogan
Hungary takes over the EU presidency in July. The Prime Minister of Hungary, Orban, places the six-month tenure under the slogan that he borrows from Donald Trump's campaign slogan. Both have expressed their sympathies for each other on several occasions.
Hungary's EU presidency is branded under the slogan "Make Europe Great Again" (Make Europe Great Again). This is the official slogan of Hungary's six-month rotating EU presidency, which begins on July 1, the Permanent Representation of the Country to the EU announced via X. Hungary is referencing Donald Trump's campaign slogan: "Make America Great Again".
The right-wing nationalist Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is considered a Trump supporter. He met Trump's presidential campaigner in his private residence in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, in early March. Orban praised Trump as the "President of Peace", while Trump in turn called Orban the "best leader" in the world. Orban then published a photo of himself and Trump with the caption: "Make America Great Again, Mr. President." Orban has been in power in Hungary since 2010. Joe Biden, the US President, sharply criticized the meeting and accused Orban of aspiring to a "dictatorship". Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief advisor, once referred to Orban as "Trump before Trump".
Orban is also considered Putin's closest ally within the EU, despite Russia's attack on Ukraine. Most recently, Hungary blocked EU-level billions in military aid for Ukraine.
Hungary will take over the EU presidency in July on a rotating basis for six months. The Hungarian government will then assume an important mediating role in disputes between EU states, and Hungarian ministers will chair EU ministerial meetings. Currently, Belgium holds this function. Along with the slogan, the Hungarian government also presented the logo of its presidency. It resembles the famous Rubik's Cube.
