Hundreds of thousands affected by heavy rain and flooding in Somalia
Several federal states were affected, particularly in the southwest of the country. Thousands of people are reportedly trapped by masses of water or cut off from the outside world. Rescue operations are underway.
Only a few months ago, a quarter of a million people had to leave their homes after severe flooding occurred in the center of the country. Before that, Somalia had been struggling with the worst drought in four decades. This, coupled with the ongoing violence in the country on the Horn of Africa and increased food prices as a result of the war in Ukraine, had claimed up to 43,000 lives, according to the United Nations.
The current floods have added to the misery of the Somali people, with estimates suggesting that another quarter of a million people might need to be displaced due to the heavy rain and resulting floods. The humanitarian situation in Somalia, already dire due to hundreds of thousands being affected by previous floods and the ongoing challenges, is projected to worsen further.
