Accident at the edge of the EM - Hundreds of policemen in mourning procession for fallen colleagues

After the motorcycle officer's death in a traffic accident while escorting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Stuttgart more than three weeks ago, several hundred of his colleagues paid tribute to him. In a funeral procession, they marched from Stuttgart Main Station to St. Eberhard Church in the morning. The deceased officer was to be honored in a memorial service, attended by Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) among others.

Approximately 700 people followed the portrait of the deceased man at the head of the funeral procession, according to estimates by a police spokesperson. A week after the accident, hundreds of his colleagues had already paid their respects and observed a minute of silence on the Schlossplatz.

The policeman was seriously injured in a collision on June 24 in Stuttgart and later died in the hospital. The motorcycle squad of the Stuttgart Traffic Police had escorted Orbán on Monday after an EM game of his country's national team to Stuttgart Airport. While doing so, a 69-year-old driver collided with the motorcycle of the officer. The motorcycle of the policeman was thrown against that of a colleague, who had closed the intersection and was also seriously injured.
