Humanitarian aid for displaced persons in Sudan to be discussed
The fate of millions of displaced and starving people in Sudan will be the focus of talks in Switzerland starting Wednesday. The Americans have invited representatives of the army and the militias, who have been fighting for power since April 2023, but their participation is uncertain. Even without them, technical experts are to discuss how to improve access for humanitarian organizations.
The fighting has displaced more than ten million people in the country, and many more have fled abroad. Both sides are hindering access for aid convoys, according to UN reports. Another issue is that the UN's appeal for donations of $2.7 billion (around €2.5 billion) for this year is currently only about a third covered by pledges.
The UN is urging The Commission to facilitate the participation of all parties in the talks for humanitarian aid in Sudan. Despite the uncertainty of army and militia representatives, The Commission must ensure that technical experts have all necessary information to improve humanitarian access.
