A "childless cat lady" is Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, said republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance. This comment, which gained popularity in a 2021 interview with Fox News, has since caused much criticism.
In fact, Kamala Harris has no biological children. From her marriage to Doug Emhoff, the current Vice President has two grown-up stepchildren – Cole, 29, and Ella Emhoff, 25. The latter has been in the public eye since Harris' inauguration in January 2021. She publicly supports her stepmother – even after J.D. Vance's attack.
"How can one be 'childless' when one has such sweet children as Cole and me?", she asked on Instagram. To this, Ella Emhoff shared a quote from her mother Kerstin Emhoff, who describes Harris as "loving, caring, sharply protective, and always present" co-parent. "I love my three parents", wrote the 25-year-old.
Who is Ella Emhoff?
The daughter of Douglas Emhoff and his first wife, film producer Kerstin Emhoff, grew up in California. Her parents divorced in 2008. Six years later, her father married the then California Attorney General, Kamala Harris. Her stepchildren call her "Momala": a combination of Mom and Kamala.
After high school, Ella Emhoff studied textile design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. She has lived in the New York City neighborhood of Bushwick since then and is therefore jokingly called "The First Daughter of Bushwick". In May 2021, Kamala Harris shared a photo of the two on Instagram and wrote: "Congratulations to our daughter Ella on her graduation. I am so proud of you. Keep dreaming with ambition and there's nothing you can't achieve. With love, Momala."
Emhoff designs and knits colorful clothing and accessories and sells them through her Instagram account. She has over 320,000 followers. She is celebrated for her unconventional, natural style – Emhoff has numerous striking tattoos, wears little makeup, and does not shave her armpit hair. She has been in a relationship with "GQ" editor Sam Hine for several years.
Kamala Harris is the "best stepmother in the world"
Ella Emhoff made her first public appearance before a large audience at the Democratic National Convention in August 2020, where she gave a speech for her stepmother as a candidate for the position of Vice President. She called her "the best stepmother in the world' at the time.
Further attention came to Emhoff during the swearing-in of US President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in January 2021. The now 25-year-old was enthusiastic in a striped Miu Miu dress and John Lennon glasses. A few days later, she signed a modeling contract with the IMG Models agency. Since then, she has modeled for Prada and Balenciaga, among others. In May 2021, she made her debut at the Met Gala in New York. "Harper's Bazaar" named Emhoff as one of its "Icons of the Year" in 2022.

On Monday, shortly after the news of Biden's withdrawal and Harris' possible candidacy became known, Emhoff shared a viral X-Post from singer Charli XCX, in which she wrote "Kamala is a 'brat'." "Brat" actually means "goat" in this context, but is meant positively. The singer explained on TikTok that "brat" is a chaotic girl who likes to party, sometimes says dumb things, but is self-confident and overcomes defeats. Harris' stepdaughter Ella Emhoff reposted the post in her Instagram Story and wrote: "Charli XCX gets it."
Two days later, Emhoff shared a selfie in her Story and called on her followers and followers to register to vote with a link. "Now is not the time to back down and shirk responsibility," she wrote. "It's up to all of us to show up, be active, and vote for our future. We can be the change we want to see."
