Hotest day on record - severe storms possible
High summer is in full swing: It's getting hot and humid. The 35-degree mark is being reached in many places. Afternoon brings heavy thunderstorms.
Blue skies and plenty of sunshine - later, storms: Today could be the hottest day of the year so far in many parts of Germany. Especially in the west, temperatures are rising well above 30 degrees, with some places even reaching 40, according to ntv meteorologists. Very warm to hot air is blowing in from the southwest, gradually becoming more humid - making it very muggy in the west, northwest, and along the high, upper, and middle Rhine.
The day started off mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching 25 to 37 degrees in some places. In the afternoon, the first, sometimes strong thunderstorms are moving in from the south to the northwest. Where it's storming, there's a risk of heavy rain and hail up to five centimeters in diameter. In the east, however, it remains sunny throughout the day.
On Wednesday, the storm activity will shift towards the east. By Thursday, the situation should calm down again.
Yesterday, temperatures already climbed well above 30 degrees. In the German Weather Service's measurement network, the station in Ahrweiler was the hottest in the country at 35.7 degrees. And the past night was the warmest of the year so far, with Unna reporting a low of 24.7 degrees, followed by Essen at 24.4 degrees and Bochum at 24.1 degrees.
The soaring temperatures have made this the potential hottest day of the year for many regions in Germany. Despite the heat, weather predictions indicate that Germany, specifically the west, might experience temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
