Holiday by the water requested - industry wants climate reports

Before the summer holidays begin in Brandenburg, Saxons and Thuringians already go to the Lausitzer Seeland or Spreewald. Last-minute people can still find holiday homes - even on the water.

Tourism - Holiday by the water requested - industry wants climate reports

The summer vacation by the lake, the holiday house directly by the water and in the green - such vacation destinations are in high demand in Brandenburg. However, many people make their decisions last minute. Those who still want to book for the upcoming holidays can find some free accommodations in the Lusatian Lake District, in the Spreewald, at the Ruppiner Sees, or in the Uckermark, as the Tourism Marketing Brandenburg GmbH (TMB) announced. Flexibility is important when choosing the region and accommodation.

After a good start to the year 2024 with 2.3 million overnight stays in the first quarter (plus 9.2% compared to the previous quarterly period), the booking situation is also good, according to statements from tourism regions and industry associations. The broad vacation corridor with early vacations in Saxony and Thuringia has so far had a positive effect for June and July. There is a broad occupancy of accommodations, for example, in the Lusatian Lake District and in the Spreewald.

In the two federal states, the summer vacations started on June 20. In Brandenburg, it is not until July 18. The federal state is popular with vacationers from Saxony and Thuringia in Brandenburg.

And how is August developing for the tourism industry in Brandenburg? That's still hard to say, according to the TMB spokesman. The trend towards increasingly last-minute bookings continues. Weather also plays a significant role for the summer balance in domestic areas. Partly, heavy weather and heavy rain have clouded the summer in Germany.

Houseboat vacation is still available - some accommodations in the Spreewald are free

Particularly well-booked are vacation offers near the water, holiday apartments and houses, family hotels, and camping sites, according to the TMB spokesman. In the Spreewald, which is popular with water tourists, the short-term travelers reportedly find accommodations only until mid-August in limited numbers.

However, those who spontaneously want a houseboat vacation could be lucky. "There are still free capacities." In the Ruppiner Seeland, boat rental and boat charter have been less in demand so far.

In the gastronomy, it remains to be seen whether the difficult start of the year for many gastronomes can be balanced out in the course of the year. "A reduction in guests using gastronomic offers is reported by the Camping Association Brandenburg," said Kastner.

Tourism regions deal with consequences of climate change

The Brandenburg tourism regions want to deal better with the consequences of climate change and extreme weather events such as drought or heavy rain in the future. A climate consequences report is being worked on, which should also contain practical guidelines and recommendations for tourism organizations and accommodation providers, as the Tourism Marketing Brandenburg GmbH announced. Participating in this is, among others, the Center for Sustainable Tourism in Eberswalde.

In workshops, tourism experts deal with the effects, for example, through water scarcity, and with strategies for protection against heat, storms, and flooding. Brandenburg is considered a rain-poor federal state and suffers from dry soils. Facing water scarcity, lakes can dry out, while camping sites can suffer from flooding.

  1. If you're considering a last-minute booking for your summer vacation, you might find some available accommodations in Brandenburg's tourism destinations such as the Lusatian Lake District, Spreewald, Ruppiner Sees, or Uckermark.
  2. Despite the positive start of the year 2024 with an increase in overnight stays, the trend of last-minute bookings continues, affecting the booking situation across regions.
  3. Vacationers from Saxony and Thuringia are popular visitors in Brandenburg, with the summer vacation starting later in Brandenburg compared to the two neighboring federal states.
  4. The weather plays a significant role in determining the summer balance for domestic tourism, with partly heavy weather and rain affecting various parts of Germany.
  5. Houseboat vacations in the Spreewald are still an option, as some accommodations are still available for last-minute bookings.
  6. Vacation offers near the water, such as holiday apartments and houses, family hotels, and camping sites, are particularly well-booked, with limited availability in the Spreewald for short-term travelers.
  7. To better cope with the consequences of climate change and extreme weather events, brandenburg tourism regions are working on a climate consequences report, which will include guidelines and recommendations for tourism organizations and accommodation providers.
