World Heritage Site - Historic building "Haus Vier Türme" burns in Bad Ems

The historical "Haus Vier Turme" in the Rhineland-Palatinate spa town of Bad Ems is on fire. The building, whose cause of the fire is currently unknown, caught fire early in the morning, according to the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis district administration. Around 150 firefighting forces are in action. According to a spokesperson, the Haus Vier Turme is being renovated, so no one was in the building in the morning. No one was reported injured.

Mayor Oliver Krügel (CDU) has been on site since the early morning hours, according to his own statements. "What's particularly bitter is that the historic roof truss is on fire," he says. "That's a loss for good."

The building, also known as Karlsburg, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"That's certainly a landmark for the city," says Krügel. "It's also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Great Spa Towns of Europe." The baroque building with four corner towers was once, according to the Tourist Association, an unofficial summer residence of Tsar Alexander II. "It's bitter for the city of Bad Ems," says Krügel. The building was supposed to house a hotel this year, which was to open this year.

The district administration asks that the surrounding area be avoided. The firefighting efforts are expected to last until the afternoon, according to a spokesperson for the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis. "We're only fighting the fire from the outside right now, we haven't been able to get a clear picture from the inside yet." Therefore, the extent of the damage and the cause of the fire are still unclear.

  1. The historic building in question is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany, specifically in the spa town of Bad Ems near the Rhine and Lahn rivers.
  2. Despite the efforts of the German fire department, the flames are currently engulfing the iconic Ems landmark, Karlsburg, which is famous for its baroque architecture and four corner towers.
  3. The unfortunate incident has affected the city as Karlsburg is not only a symbol of Bad Ems but also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Great Spa Towns of Europe.
  4. The fire department is finding it challenging to access the interior of the building due to the intensity of the blaze involving the historic roof truss, originally from Rhineland-Palatinate's Bad Ems, leaving the extent of the damage and the cause of the fires still a mystery.
