Highest number of unauthorized entries since 2015
The number of refugees entering Germany without permission will be significantly higher this year than in previous years - but the upward trend was halted in October.
The Federal Police recorded 112,178 unauthorized entries from January to October, according to the Federal Police Headquarters in Potsdam. Last year as a whole, they registered almost 92,000 unauthorized refugees. According to the German government, the last time the number was higher was in 2015, the year of the so-called refugee crisis, with around 217,000.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) initially announced stationary border controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland for ten days on 16 October and then extended them several times.
From February onwards, the number of refugees entering the country without authorization initially rose steadily and jumped sharply from September to October in particular. According to the Federal Police, 14,701 unauthorized entries were recorded in August, 21,366 in September and 20,059 in October.
From the beginning of January to the end of October, around 267,000 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time - around 67 percent more than in the same period last year.
The rise in unauthorized migrant entry is a cause for concern, with the number of unauthorized refugees expected to surpass previous years' figures significantly. This trend was momentarily halted in October, but not before reaching an elevated level, marked by the highest number of unauthorized entries since 2015. Despite the increase in unauthorized entries, police have been actively monitoring these situations, aiming to prevent crime associated with such incidents.
