Supreme Court intervenes in dispute over rights of trans people

The U.S. Supreme Court steps into the Transgender rights debate, taking up an appeal from the federal government seeking to overturn state-level bans on gender-affirming treatments.

The Court's decision arrives as Republican-led states impose a slew of restrictions on Transgender people, affecting their participation in sports, bathroom usage, and organization of Drag performances. On the other hand, the Biden administration and democratically controlled states extend protection to Transgender individuals.

At the heart of the Supreme Court case is a Tennessee law that prohibits the use of hormone therapy and puberty blockers for minors. A lack of urgent Court action, according to lawyers representing Transgender minors in Tennessee, will leave them and their families uncertain about access to crucial medical treatment.

Transgender activist and actor Elliot Page, best known for films like "Juno" and "Inception," is among the 57 Transgender individuals who signed a petition urging the Supreme Court to review the case. The proceedings are set to commence in the autumn.
