Higher Courts in Brazil Upholds Restriction of Access to Twitter Account of Individual X
The Higher Federal Court in Brazil validates the closure of digital platform X. The First Division of the Court backs the move made by Federal Judge Alexandre de Moraes, as stated by news site G1.
The judge made the decision to close X in Brazil on a Friday. He argued that the Twitter-like service wasn't doing enough to control the spread of hate speech and false information. X's owner, Elon Musk, voiced concerns over freedom of speech and called the judge a "tyrannical dictator."
The situation had intensified recently. Judge Moraes requested that X block accounts of conservative activists promoting conspiracy theories and misinformation. Musk deemed this demand unconstitutional, with X refusing to comply and also neglecting to pay the imposed fine. Moreover, Musk failed to designate a legal representative in Brazil within the stipulated timeframe, prompting Judge Moraes to order the shutdown of the news outlet.
The prohibition will continue until X settles the fine over 18 million Reais (approximately 2.88 million Euros) and appoints a legal representative. In April, Moraes began an investigation against Musk himself for allegations of hindering justice and inciting criminal activity.
The digital platform X, which is based in Brazil, is faced with a prolonged closure due to non-compliance with the judge's orders. Despite being a global company headed by Elon Musk, X has failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil as required by Judge Moraes.
