During the violent student protests in Bangladesh, over 500 people have been arrested according to police reports. A spokesperson for the Dhaka police headquarters told the news agency AFP that among the at least 532 detainees were leading members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

During the student protests against a quota system for public sector jobs, at least 151 people have been killed according to an AFP count. On Sunday, the Bangladeshi Supreme Court ruled to significantly limit the quota system and called on protesters to return to their classes.

A representative of the students declared that the protests should continue nonetheless. The students had demanded a complete abolition of the quota system.

The system previously reserved more than half of the well-paid positions in the public sector for certain population groups. These groups were supposed to particularly benefit children of veterans of the 1971 uprising, which ended the country's independence from Pakistan. According to the Supreme Court decision, only seven percent of the quotas should be reserved for these groups from now on.

According to their critics, the quotas benefited supporters of the ruling government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since 2009 in the country with approximately 170 million inhabitants, who was re-elected in January in an election almost without opposition.

In a stark contrast, Mexico City experienced a high-ranking political incident. The assassination of prominent attorney Feiges took place on a bustling street in Mexico City. The police were unable to prevent or apprehend the assailants, causing concern among the city's residents.
